Lisa E. Kim, PhD
University of York (United Kingdom)

Associate Professor (Senior Lecturer) in Psychology in Education, the Director of the Health, Effectiveness, And Retention of Teachers (HEART) Research Group at the University of York, UK (2018 – present), and a Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol) with the British Psychological Society.

She received PhD in Psychology at the University of Sydney, Australia (2016), and worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for the Teacher Selection Project at the University of York, funded by the European Research Council Consolidator Grant (2016 – 2018).

Her research interests lie in understanding the characteristics of what makes a great teacher, particularly in relation to non-cognitive characteristics and wellbeing. Specifically, she investigates the role of teachers’ non-cognitive characteristics and teacher wellbeing on processes (e.g., instructional quality) and outcomes (e.g., student academic achievement, teacher self-efficacy). She uses interdisciplinary frameworks (e.g., personality and individual differences, educational psychology, organisational psychology) using quantitative (e.g., multilevel structural equation modelling) and qualitative (e.g., thematic trajectory analysis) methods.

With great experience in contributing to national and international projects, she currently leads two funded projects. The first is a longitudinal qualitative project, Being a teacher in England during the COVID-19 pandemic, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Impact Acceleration Account that examines teachers’ experiences throughout the pandemic (2020 – present). The second is an international quantitative project, Research Methodologies in Education (ReMiE): Enhancing the research capacities of academics and PhD students in the field of education, funded by World University Network (WUN) Research Development Fund that examines the needs and ways to support research capacities for education PhD students and academics (2022 – present).
